Hikâye yüzyıl öncesinde geçmektedir. Nadja, İngiltere'nin Londra yakınlarındaki bir yetimhanede yaşayan neşeli, şeker bir kızdır. Nadja daha bebekken yetimhaneye bırakılmıştır. Bu yüzden hep babası ve annesinin öldüğünü düşünmüştür. Ancak 13. yaş gününden önce ona bir paket gelir ve içinden kalp şeklinde bir broş çıkar, böylece annesinin hâlâ yaşıyor olabileceğini öğrenir. Daha sonra yaşadığı yere Karahindiba adında yolculuk yapan bir sirk gelir. Nadja bu gezgin sirk sayesinde annesini bulabileceğini düşünür ve sirke katılır. Bu sırada herkes esrarengiz bir adam olan Kurobara hakkında konuşuyordur. Öte yandan Nadja'nın kalp şeklindeki broşunu çalmak isteyen iki adamdan, romantik bir kişi olan Francis kurtarır. Öyle ki bundan sonra Nadja'nın hayatı eskisi gibi olmayacaktır artık.
