Ippo Makunouchi, Japonya'da yaşayan sıradan bir lise öğrencisidir. Ailesinin işi olan balıkçılık dükkânında okuldan gelince çalışıyordur. Diğer sıradan öğrenciler gibi gezemiyordur, çünkü annesine yardım etmek zorundadır. Balıkçılık işinde çalıştıkları içinde balık ve kurtçuk kokusu üstlerine siniyordur. Arkadaşları bu yüzden Ippo ile dalga geçiyorlardır. Bir gün okuldan bir grup çocuk tarafından sıkıştırılıp aşağılanır ve dövülür. Bu sırada onu bu durumdan Mamoru Takamura adlı biri kurtarır. Mamoru profesyonel bir boksördür. Ippo'nun kaderi bu noktadan sonra alabildiğine değişecektir. Artık o da bir boksör olmak istiyordur ve bunun içinde elinden geleni yapacaktır.
