Çin'deki Qinghai ilinde Bayankala dağlarında Ranma ve babası Genma Saotome antremanda iken Genma, Jusenkyo adında (çevirisi Üzüntünün Sıçradığı anlamında) lanetli bir yere düşer. Her bir ilkbahar ile ilgili ilgili bir hikaye olarak herhangi biri ya da başka birşey yüz ya da bin yıl önce boğulmuş ve herhangi biri lanetli yere düşerse boğulan herhangi birşeye dönüşür ve soğuk suyla temasa geçerler, ayrıca orjinal akılları, kişilikleri ve becerileri yeni bir formdadır: lanetli yerdeki sıcak sular onların gerçek formlarına geri döner. Genma düşünce orada boğulmuş bir pandaya, Ranma da düşünce orada boğulmuş olan bir kıza dönüşür.

Japonya'ya dönünce Genma, Ranma'ya hiç tanışmadığı nişanlısının bir kaç blok ötedeki evde olduğunu söyler. Aynı zamanda Soun Tendo Ranma'ya onun 3 kız evlatlarından biriyle evlenmesini söyler (onları hiç duymamıştır) ayrıca Tendo'da dojo'ya taşınır. Onların Ranma ile ilk tanışmasında onu kız formunda olarak görürler. Akane Temdo bazı aksilikler yüzünden (banyoda içeri girerken) erkek olduğunu görür ve onun soğuk su üzerinde bir kıza dönüştüğünü anlar. İki büyük abla, en genç kız kardeşi Akane'yi onunla nişanlanmaya iter(erkeklerden nefret eder okuldaki kaba davranışları yüzümdem) "ve Ranma yarı bir kızdır". Serinin geri kalanında Ranma ve Akane arasında aşk/nefret ilişkileri böylece başlar.
